REVEREND ALISON WAY

Looking back - looking forward

Looking back – at the end of May we had a really enjoyable and renewing celebration of Rogation – as we worshipped in and then walked between all four churches of the benefice. Each leg of the walk was completed by ten humans and a dog (not the same humans, nor the same dog each time!). Six people walked the whole way from Broad Town to Hilmarton via Clyffe Pypard and Tockenham. The weather was kind - it started overcast, it rained on us for 10 minutes at the end of lunch and we finished the day in glorious (if a little windy) sunshine! The landscape, paths, roads, crops, livestock and wildlife were very varied and spoke deeply of God’s love for us in many ways, and provided much inspiration for prayer for the harvest, our rural environment and economy. This months’ picture depicts us on the way to Hilmarton (where we were shortly to be sustained by some much needed tea and scrumptious cake before a very uplifting Songs of Praise service to finish the day!)

Looking forward – as we begin July, this is often the time we take out to refresh and renew ourselves via our holidays.  Whether we are holidaying near or far, or holidaying at home this year, can I commend taking time in these longer days of summer, to reflect on the glory of the world around us, how it speaks to us of God’s love, care and creativity, and to continue those prayers for the harvest, our rural environment and economy.  Also over the weeks ahead spare a thought and a prayer for our children and young people, particularly those leaving one school for pastures new whatever they may be.  Please prayerfully support those finding it difficult to identify what the next step is especially those seeking employment for the first time in our very tough economic climate.

CHURCH THEFTS

The PCC would like to ask everyone to please be vigilant when walking around the village. Our church has very little lead but there have been several attempted lead thefts from churches within our Deanery. The most recent at Hilmarton only last week.

CHURCHYARD WORKING PARTY

There are many old graves and headstones in the Village Churchyard that need care and attention. There will be a working party on Tuesday 19^th July from 6.30pm. Please bring tools, no grass cutting required; it’s mostly moss and Ivy removal. Refreshments will be provided. All help greatly appreciated.

“FRIENDS” OF CHRIST CHURCH

Thank you to the members of the village who have kindly set up standing orders for “The Friends”. We look forward to more people using this way of donating / becoming a Friend. Forms can be obtained from Rosie (731526) or Clive (731511).

The scaffolding will be going up inside the Church this summer to take the old plaster off the west wall, so the Friends will then see where their money is going.

ART EXHIBITION

Thank you to everyone who supported this event. We had a successful weekend, 98 pictures were exhibited and we made a profit of £385.

SCHOOL FETE

Thank you to the villagers who supported the School fete and congratulations to the staff and parents who put on such a grand afternoon. The school took £5,036 on the day but there are some expenses to come out of that. The school team won the football tournament and the displays were superb from the maypole dancing to the gymnastics, the Irish dancing and the kick boxing.

GOLDEN WEDDING

Betty and Jerry Bastin celebrated their Golden Wedding on June 3^rd, with a family party at their home in Chapel Lane. A ‘Chinese Banquet’ from the Jade Tiger Restaurant, was followed by Strawberries and Champagne and a beautiful ‘Golden’ cake topped with sugar flowers designed and made by Sophie (10). Betty and Jerry wish to thank their lovely family (Jonathan, Nicky & Sophie, Rupert and Dawn, Molly, Amy and Tom) for giving them such a happy day!!!

BROAD TOWN PRE SCHOOL

We had a fun-filled day on June 11^th at the Broad Town School Fete. Thanks to all those who helped with the fete. Pre-School had a toy tombola, pop in and paint sessions and cookies and cakes. We raised £250. Our Pre-School balloons were popular with the children, and the sunshine was a great advantage too!

Tempest Photography have been into Pre-School and taken individual and group photographs, and we have some exciting enrichment activities coming up:

30^th June A Playranger will be leading a Forest School session and cook-out.

7^th July Butts Farm visit.

14^th July Sports Day and Leavers Presentation.

CONCERT IN ST GILES' CHURCH TOCKENHAM FRIDAY 15TH JULY AT 7.30pm

We are delighted to say that the Kentwood Show Choir is coming to Tockenham! It's their first visit here and it should be a fantastic evening. The Kentwood Show Choir, from Swindon, Wiltshire, is like no other choir you will ever have seen before! Led by Sheila Harrod, the Choir delivers songs from its vast repertoire with energy, passion, movement and style. From blues to ballads, showstoppers to swing, and classics to chart toppers, the Choir creates a sound that can take your breath away. .Tickets are £8 (£7 for concessions) and the price includes cheese and wine refreshments. PARISH COUNCIL

1. School crossing. A set of bollards and markings have been put on the road near the school to help children cross safely. Unfortunately cars are parking too close to them, obscuring them and reducing their value as a safety aid. Vehicle drivers may not be able to see them. Please think before you park.

2. Footpaths. The PC is keeping a log of footpath problems, but please bear in mind that we have neither the power, nor the manpower, to keep them clear. We rely on the landowners to maintain them. However, there is much you can do — particularly as a pair of secateurs, and strong wellies can do much to improve access.

GUIDED WALK ROUND AVEBURY HENGE AND CHURCH BY ARCHAEOLOGIST BOB CLARKE

On August 13^th we will meet in the National Trust main car park for 1pm and the walk will take about two and half hours. The terrain is flat and the distance a leisurely 2 miles.

For hardy souls Bob is prepared to extend the walk to West Kennet long barrow.

Cost £5 per Adult – Children free. Light refreshments available after the walk. We would like a guide on numbers so names please to Bob Clarke or any member of the PCC.

BROAD TOWN WI

Broad Town WI had a very different speaker this month. Christine Kinder, plus three harps of varying sizes, enlightened us on the history of this fascinating instrument. Everyone knows the archetypal sounds of the Harp - the classic 'angel' music of hands running up and down the strings - but there is oh so much more to this amazingly versatile instrument; in fact it really is an ancient forerunner of the synthesizer and is capable of so many different sounds that we were all completely surprised. Christine told us how the Harp has evolved over centuries with evidence of the existence of Harps having been found in ancient Egyptian tombs and in the far East. Harps have changed enormously over the years from simple structures with a few (out of tune) strings to being extremely sophisticated and complex. The large Harp Christine brought with her not only was multi-stringed, but also had the ability to change the pitch (sharps and flats) of each string through a complicated mechanism of levers and finally (as if that wasn't enough) the Harp also had several pedals which can be set to a multitude of positions; the harpist not only has to be ambidextrous but must display pretty nifty foot-work too! It reminded me of trying to pat your head whilst rubbing your tummy.

Between the stories and anecdotes Christine played pieces going back as far as the early middle ages, right up to music of the present day; Lady Gaga and Coldplay songs sounded just as good as the classics of Gershwin's Summer Time and Henry VIII's Greensleeves! The music chosen demonstrated just how expressive the Harp is depending on the key of the piece and also HOW the strings are played. I'm not sure what everyone else expected from this talk, but I for one was really pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it immensely.

Broad Town WI meet every third Wednesday of the month and our next meeting is on 20^th July when the speaker will be Reg Dawson who will be telling us all about the lives of the American Cowboys and bringing along cowboy artifacts. BIG GIG – 3rd September 2011

Following on from the success of the Little Gig (and our thanks go to all the bands, the Social Club and all who came), we are pleased to announce we have booked Beyond the Break and Ali Finneran, plus have found another band that play “folk rock, jazzy blues, ska, funk vibes through to ballads and the occasional jumped out rant” called Kolakoca, making a total of 13 bands / artists - our biggest and best ever line up. Full details and sample tracks are available on our website. And we will have a recording star amongst our midst – Josh Kumra of Kicaberry is currently playing the large festivals with Wretch32, who have a single out on the 14^th August featuring Josh, which is expected to be a top 5 hit!

Apart from the music, for 2011 we have enhanced the alternative entertainment, with drum workshops, guitar workshops, trampolines, boat swings, bouncy castle and bucking bronco. Food-wise there will not only be the obligatory BBQ, but also a selection of Indian Curries from award winning Josh Krori who featured on Gordon Ramsey’s ‘F Word’, plus a stall providing Sweet and Savoury Crepes. As always, adding glamour to the culinary delights, we have those stalwarts the WI providing Tea, Coffee and Fantastic Cakes, plus the usual well run Bar provided by the Social Club, serving Real Ales, Real Ciders and a great selection of other alcoholic and soft drinks. Top music and top gastronomy; what more can you ask for?

If you want to come en-mass, we have a group discount promotion: buy 6 adult tickets and you will receive the 7^th free! So round up your family and friends and benefit from your bulk buy – this promotion may be withdrawn at any time, so get your tickets early! We are still limited to 500 attendees and following on from last year’s success and the improvements we have made and the fantastic line-up we fully expect to sell out, so guarantee your Big Gig place and buy your tickets now – an extensive marketing campaign starts in July.

SAFARI SUPPER

We are planning to run a Safari Supper in the Village on Saturday 15^th October. We do have 10 hosts but ideally would like another one. If anyone is interested in participating please contact Sara on 731114. We shall start altogether in Cotmarsh, work up through the Village dividing up between venues and finishing all together again in Pye Lane. Cost £17.50 per head for a 3 course meal – wine included. LINK 6 Good Neighbour Scheme offers a full “good neighbour” service which goes beyond just driving clients to / from medical appointments. We can also help to make your life more bearable and enjoyable by being neighbourly, in other words, doing things like:- Dropping in for a chat, Carrying out small DIY jobs in the house, Doing a bit of sewing, Walking the dog, Reading a book or newspaper, Accompanying people on a walk.

It is not just the elderly – anybody who needs our help can ask and we will try to help. We do operate a voluntary donation scheme to help with our running costs.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. All are welcome including painters who are beginners.

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.
