REVEREND ALISON WAY

Scorching June?

As I write I have just heard a long-term weather forecast predicting a scorching June.  After our unusually dry and warm spring (thus far), this may well not be the best thing for the crops or our gardens.  And yet part of me wants it to be warm and dry for the some significant social events coming in June – not least the art show in Christchurch Broad Town alongside the school fete and fun run on 11th June (and also 12th June), the benefice outing to the Salisbury Cathedral flower festival on Friday 17th June, and Tockenham fair on Saturday 18th June. 

In church we will also be thinking about a slightly different sun in June, as we celebrate God’s son going back to heaven on Ascension Day, followed by marking the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  Do join us for this or any of our worship this month (details below)

This month’s picture is me literally wearing our crowd watching Jesus on the first Palm Sunday, as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.  This artwork was done by the children at our work shop back in April (and we had lots of fun making donkeys with moving legs, and icing donkey and Jesus biscuits too).  Further workshops are in the planning, hopefully one a little before our celebration of harvest in the autumn, and one to coincide with the Christingle closer to Christmas.  I will keep you posted on the dates for these, which are particularly for primary school aged youngsters.  Thanks to Jackie Gillam who took the photo too!

NEWSLETTER DELIVERIES

Thank you to Mrs Sykes for volunteering to deliver in Horns Lane. We still need someone to deliver in the lower end of Broad Town Road. Please is there anyone, or two people sharing, who feel that they could do the task for us.

BROAD TOWN SCHOOL

Congratulations to the Dodgeball team who won the inter-schools competition.

There is a non-uniform day coming up to help raise items for the School fete. On 10^th June, the cost of not wearing uniform will be something chocolate.

At the school fete stalls will include home-made cakes, bottles, plants, tombola’s and nearly new. The children will be giving a gym display and doing maypole dancing.

ART EXHIBITION

This will take place in Broad Town Church over the weekend Saturday June 11^th and Sunday June 12^th from 10.00am to 5.00pm both days. It is an open exhibition and if anyone wishes to show their work please contact Janet on 01793 850931. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

BROAD TOWN WI

The Broad Town WI met on a lovely sunny evening on Wed 20th April in the village hall to hear a very appropriately chosen talk -"Gardening made easy" by a formally trained old school professional. The speaker; Mr Alan Christopher has gardened professionally for 59yrs, starting as an apprentice to the Bath Parks department at the age of 15yrs, before moving into large estate management and then landscaping gardens including the ones around Bath university and for numerous clients in London. He gave us the benefit of his knowledge and passed on tips learned through years of experience. We were able to quiz him on our own gardening problems at the end of his talk and he offered solutions to the best time to water seeds in, how to deal with fairy rings amongst others.

The date of our next meeting is 15th June when we will be joined by Christine Kinder who is a Harpist.

BROAD TOWN PARISH PLAN STEERING GROUP

Great news! The Broad Town Parish Plan is now complete, and has been adopted by the Parish Council. We're in the process of getting it printed, and it will be through your letterboxes soon.

BIG GIG – 3rd September 2011, LITTLE GIG - 17^th June

First up, please note the change of date of the Little Gig to the 17^th June. We currently have four acts lined up for your entertainment; two rock bands namely Beyond The Break and This Way Up (both with local connections), Koribantez giving us a bit of Latin / Jazz Infusion, plus acoustic artist Ali Finneran – there may yet be more. This is a FREE event (donations always welcome!), so please come along and show these artists how much we appreciate live music in Broad Town! The venue is the village hall, doors open at 8pm. Thanks to the Social Club for providing the bar and letting us take over their evening.

We’ll also be providing PA services to the School Fete on the 11^th June and will have Big Gig tickets for sale with discounts for group purchases, so round up your family and friends and benefit from your bulk buy. Standard ticket prices are Adults over 16: £15, 12 – 16 year olds inclusive: £5 and under 12s: free.

We’re still working hard at improving the Big Gig yet again and making steady progress. We have had more luck with sponsorship, with those long term supporters Broad Town Cars agreeing financial support for the 6^th year running – many thanks to them. GUIDED WALK ROUND AVEBURY HENGE AND CHURCH BY ARCHAEOLOGIST BOB CLARKE

On August 13^th we will meet in the National Trust main car park for 1pm and the walk will take about two and half hours. The terrain is flat and the distance a leisurely 2 miles.

For hardy souls Bob is prepared to extend the walk to West Kennet long barrow. More details to follow: if anyone is interested please contact Sara on 01793 731114.
