REVEREND ALISON WAY

“Running Rector”– Please support Christian Aid!

This picture is of me (taken by Val Procter) just before I ran in the Broad Town 5 mile fun run at Broad Church of England School Fete in June this year. This was my first ever running event, and I came an unimpressive 202nd, but was very pleased to have finished in less than an hour. Many thanks to all those who cheered me on that day, and also those who encourage me when they see me out training on the roads round here!

Running in the Broad Town Five was all part of my training towards an event I have been working towards since January to mark my half century on this earth. On Sunday October 9th 2011 I am running my first ever (and almost certainly my last ever) half-marathon round the Royal London Parks. I am running as part of Team Poverty to support Christian Aid. Christian Aid work globally for profound change that eradicates the causes of poverty, striving to achieve equality, dignity and freedom for all, regardless of faith or nationality. They also provide urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes.

There are three ways you can support/sponsor me for Christian Aid before 9th October.

1. You can give online using the following link: http://www.justgiving.com/Alison-Way0

2. You can text to 70070 and enter the code RRAW50 followed by the amount (1,2,3,4,5 or 10 pounds)

3. If you see me between now and then you can fill in a traditional paper sponsor form and hand over the cash or a cheque in the fullness of time.

Thank you for your generous support for all things Christian Aid!

With love in Christ, Alison Way, the ‘Running’ Rector, Benefice of Woodhill, The Rectory, Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, SN4 7PY alisonway@tiscali.co.uk, 01793 739044

PS Don’t forget to book a place with me for your primary school aged children at the harvest work shop on Saturday 24th September 2011 at Hilmarton Church Hall 10am-11am.
Miss it, miss out!

CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

The next children’s workshop will be on Saturday 24th September in Hilmarton Church hall. This is open to all primary school children for a day of craft, stories and, above all, fun.

AVEBURY WALK

Many thanks must be expressed to Bob Clarke for the very interesting and informative guided walk we had around Avebury. We were 20 in all and we all learnt a lot from having the Circle explained to us by an expert.

FRIENDS OF CHRIST CHURCH – AT LAST, AT LAST!

At last work has begun on the interior of the church. The rendering on the west wall has been removed to reveal original stone work. The plan is to let the wall dry out and then consider what covering should replace the old, however all those who have seen the original stone work would rather have that if possible. Obviously original mortar would need attending to and obviously there would have to be a consultation period for this. Hopefully decisions will be made by the end of the drying out period, about twelve months.

Anyone interested in having a look contact a member of the PCC. If you would like to help towards this work by becoming a friend of the church contact

Rosemary Mclaren Telephone: 731526. We ask a minimum of £12 per annum per person and this can be done by cheque or standing order.

GRAVEYARD

We have now had a few working parties in the graveyard to tidy up some of the old graves. Thank you to all who have helped in this project particularly Mrs Hatherall who has stripped and varnished one of the Benches. If there is anyone who has half an hour to spare sometime and wishes to help we would be delighted to see you. We are hoping to make the area a peaceful space to sit and let the world go by.

SEPTEMBER COFFEE MORNING

The café will be open for business on 10th September for convivial company, good food and time away from the chores with refreshments and cakes for sale.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

The inaugural month of Broad Town's official Community Speed Watch scheme has been extremely busy. Sanctioned by Wiltshire Council, fully Police-trained and vetted, the CSW team is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers from within the village. The scheme is not vindictive: far from being an attempt to catch anyone out, it provides Police and local government with the vital data they need in applying effective traffic-management measures such as the provision of 20mph zones outside schools, upgraded street lighting and applying appropriate speed-calming measures like priority-flow arrangement and the speed-sensitive LED signs whose value has been proven along many other main roads across the country.

Limited numbers of attractive speed awareness keyrings/supermarket trolley tokens and quality promotional pens are available to interested drivers and pedestrians alike – stop for a chat with the CSW team and claim yours while stocks last! In just the first fortnight of August, out of a total of 4114 vehicles surveyed in the 30mph zone, the registration numbers and details of an astonishing total of 392 motorists with an average speed of 40mph were recorded – a figure more than 300% higher than that logged by the CSW schemes in some other local villages. With back-to-school time upon us, the Speed Watch team will be redoubling its efforts to raise awareness and promote safe driving through Broad Town.

BROAD TOWN SOCIAL CLUB

There will not be any Social Club on Friday 2nd September and Sunday 4th September.

The social club is a friendly bunch who meet on Friday nights (from 8pm) for a chat with a drink or a game of pool or darts, we also have a football table.

Membership is £2.00 for the year (Jan to Dec).

On Sundays we run a bingo with a weekly tote which is won every week, doors open 7pm eyes down at 8pm. We have a NEW bitter (Tetley's smooth flow) which is at a reduced promotional price. Why not come along and join us.

We will be holding some events through the year. On Friday 28th Oct we will be holding a Halloween party from 8pm. There will be prizes for the best boy and girl in fancy dress and the best pumpkin. The music by Sounds City Discotheques. Raffle (for Adults only) Child over 5 £1 Adults £2 ALL CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPAIED BY AN ADULT.

On Friday Nov 25th We will be having Live music by AUDIO VANDALS. We will have a barrel of real ale and entry is free.

More events to be announced.

PARISH COUNCIL CLERKS CLIPPINGS

Dog Mess. With the hotter days, several areas of the Village had an overpowering smell of dog mess. Three areas in particular, the track to Littletown Farm (a public right of way), Pye Lane, and Thornhill. Dog walkers are reminded that it is against the law to allow a dog to foul any footpath, Right of Way, bridleway or public road. The assistance of the Dog Warden has been requested.

Road Safety. You are all aware by now that the Community Speedwatch teams are up and running. We want this to be a safe Village — so if you get a letter you have only yourself to blame. On the same topic, the Chairman gave a presentation to the Area Traffic Group in the hope that we will get funding to carry out more road safety improvements.

The Parish Council has reported the appalling state of hedges, verges and the road through Whiteways/ Thornhill to Wilts County Council.

BROAD TOWN WI

Last month we had the opportunity to visit Westonbirt School, a grade 1 listed building and garden, not usually open to the public. We were the guests of Kate Galea, formerly of the Old Vicarage, who now lives at the Carpenters House in the school grounds. She had permission for us to explore the grounds and formal gardens. The day did not look promising, being cold and wet, but the rain stopped in the late afternoon and the sun came out. Kate told us a little of the history of the house and grounds and then sixteen of us walked around the gardens. I think we were all amazed at how beautiful they were and how well maintained. The formal garden was lovely in the evening sunshine, with a wide variety of brightly coloured perennials and well-tended lawns. The hard landscaping was interesting too with ornate grottos and gateways and a recently restored camellia house.

The grounds were lovely with many mature trees and interesting views and the house itself was spectacular, built of honey coloured stone intricately carved and enhanced by the evening sunshine. After our tour we were invited into Kate’s beautiful home for a sumptuous home cooked buffet, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

As usual, Broad Town WI are manning the refreshment tent at the Big Gig where tea, cappuccinos, hot chocolate and delicious homemade cakes will be available. Come and visit us.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 21st September at 7.30pm and is entitled ‘Ladies of the tower’. New members are always very welcome or just come along and see if it's your 'thing'. President Jenny Tel: 739268, Secretary Sandra 731523.

RIDE AND STRIDE 2011

Takes place on Saturday 10th September. Last year £406 was shared equally between the Historic Churches Trust and our own church in Broad Town and we are grateful to all those who took part. If you would like to walk or cycle around our beautiful countryside, enjoy refreshments at many of the churches and raise some money for our church while you do so, please contact Carolyn Crocker on 01793 852754.

BIG GIG – 3rd September 2011

As I write this, Josh Kumra is No.1 in the UK Singles charts with Wretch 32 and the song ‘Don’t Go’. Josh, who with Carra Bacon are Kicaberry, has stuck to his commitment to the Big Gig – he could have been playing a large festival in Jersey on Saturday! It’ll be a while before we get a chart topping artist at the Big Gig again, so come and give Josh a huge cheer - it will be a real “I was there!” moment in the history of the Big Gig and Broad Town!

Plus don’t forget we have 12 other amazing bands, drum workshops, guitar workshops, trampolines, boat swings, bouncy castle / assault course plus face Painting and / or fake tattoos. Food-wise there will not only be the obligatory BBQ, but also a selection of Indian Curries from award winning Josh Krori who featured on Gordon Ramsey’s ‘F Word’, plus a stall providing Sweet and Savoury Crepes. As always, adding glamour to the culinary delights, we have those stalwarts the WI providing Tea, Speciality Coffee, Hot Chocolate and Fantastic Cakes, plus the usual well run Bar provided by the Social Club, serving Real Ales, Real Ciders and a great selection of other alcoholic and soft drinks. Top music and top gastronomy; what more can you ask for?

If there are any left, don’t delay, obtain your tickets today by phoning James on 731108 or drop in to Holmes Music (Swindon), Broad Hinton Post Office, Bassett Books (Wootton Bassett), Rouses (Wootton Bassett), The Trotting Horse (Bushton) or Sound Knowledge (Marlborough). Standard ticket prices are Adults over 16: £15, 12 – 16 year olds inclusive: £5 and under 12s: free.

And lastly, please, please come and give us a hand to clear up on Sunday morning. We are usually exhausted and emotional by then, so any help you can give will be truly appreciated. Enjoy the Big Gig 2011. www.broadtownbiggig.co.uk / www.facebook.com/BroadTownBigGig

SAFARI SUPPER

We are planning to run a Safari Supper in the Village on Saturday 15th October. We do have 10 hosts but ideally would like another one. If anyone is interested in participating please contact Sara on 731114. We shall start altogether in Cotmarsh, work up through the Village dividing up between venues and finishing all together again in Pye Lane. Cost £17.50 per head for a 3 course meal – wine included. Proceeds to Christ Church. Tickets from 731114.

CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING

As in previous years the café will be open on the last Saturday of November. We will have refreshments, a Tombola, cards and a Christmas sales table. We will be having a draw and the 1st prize will be £50, 2nd prize will be a hamper and the 3rd prize will be a meat voucher from Crumps. There will be other prizes as well. Do come and join us for a fun morning – you do not know what gifts and cards you might find.

BROAD TOWN PRE-SCHOOL & FOREST SCHOOL

It has been an exciting few weeks at Pre-School.

Our Cook-Out day was successful, and the children enjoyed building a fire in the Forest school. The burgers, sausages and toasted marshmallows went down well too! There was singing around the fire and the children created a sculpture using forest materials.

The Swindon Advertiser came along, and the Cook-Out featured in the press. This term we have been focusing on healthy eating and some delicious recipes have been prepared, using fruit and vegetables. Sports day was great fun, and children and parents took part in the races. We wish this years leavers all the very best as they start school in September. Have a wonderful summer.

Please contact us if you would like a visit, or if you have any questions .Tel : 01793 731911 www.broadtownpreschool.co.uk

HARVEST

This year harvest Songs of Praise will be on Sunday October 16th at 6pm. Beforehand we will have the café open from 5pm for harvest tea of sandwiches, cakes and other goodies. Come and join in with all the fun and with the singing of traditional harvest hymns.

FLOWER FESTIVAL JULY 14TH AND 15TH 2012

Yes, we know it is a whole year away but we thought we would let you know now.

That weekend next year is when the Church will be having a flower festival and we invite you to make your clever scarecrows. The theme for both will be “BOOKS”. That means you can represent any book, adult or children’s that you wish to. You now have plenty of thinking time.

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Tea and Coffee provided but do bring a packed lunch.

Help will be given to those who request it. Contact telephone numbers 731154, 731519.
