HAVE YOU GONE GREEN?

No I don’t mean either politically or in an eco way.

Have you looked around and seen how many different shades of green there are on plants. Plants come in so many shapes and textures but they are all plants.

People come in so many different shapes and natures but they are all humans and all made in the image of God. What do we mean by “the image of God”? We all know that he is a loving God who wants the best for all of us but He gave us all “free will” to make our own choices.

Do we all choose to be loving, helpful and kind people and to live with His image guiding us?

RECYCLING BINS IN THE SCHOOL CARPARK

Unfortunately Wiltshire Council have decided to remove the recycling bins from the school car park. They say this is because we all have kerbside collection now and so they are no longer required.

The Wiltshire Air Ambulance clothing bin will remain, so please continue to use that.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

Work is moving on, albeit slowly, towards evaluating the “options to policies” to be included in the Broad Town section of the proposed Neighbourhood Plan for the villages in our area. The joint working group that consists of members of the CLPG and the Parish Council will be meeting in June to look at all the draft options relating to Broad Town that are based upon the views from previous consultation events. The purpose of the meeting will be to sift the draft options into three groups; those that are not evidence based and can be discarded; those that are evidence based and will move on to the next stage; and those where further evidence may need to be sought. At the same time we will continue to seek independent expertise and resources from the project managers and Wiltshire Council to help us through the next stages of analysing the available data, to ensure that there is sufficiently robust evidence to support the selected options. We want to be absolutely sure that this process is right for our village. We will of course keep you informed of progress through this Newsletter and our Community Forum and please keep looking out for the invitations to our update meetings.

Please contact us if you would like to go onto our mailing list on lorraine@mrsbillis.co.uk. More information is on our Community Forum on www.broad-town.co.uk or from project managers Common Places www.New-V.co.uk.

BROAD TOWN WI

May’s meeting was held at Toomers Garden Centre near Lydiard Millicent. Nigel demonstrated how to make a moss hanging basket filled with trailing begonias, lobelia, pelargonium's, geraniums, fuchsias, surfinias, verbena and marigolds.

It was amazing how many plants fitted into a 14’’ basket. The finished basket was raffled and £40 raised for a Meningitis charity.

We then had tea and some delicious and very generous pieces of cake, and a chance to buy some plants some of which were really unusual.

Next month we are hoping to have a golf taster session.

If you would be interested in joining the WI we meet on the third Wednesday of the month at Broad Town village hall. For more information please phone Jane on 01793 731105.

THE FOUR WAYS COMMUNITY PUB

Broad Town Village Hall is run by Broad Town Social Club: a small, unpaid committee of villagers of all ages and backgrounds – we always need more event ideas, supporters, and of course people to have fun participating in our activities.

BAR EVERY FRIDAY 8pm-late Please note: we will be CLOSED on Friday 13 June as everyone will be at the Little Gig at the Crown.

You don't have to be a member: anyone can pop in for a drink and a chin-wag. Free to play every Friday night: official pub pool table, table tennis, table football, darts; listen to your favourite tunes by bringing your CDs or hooking your phone/mp3 player up to our pro 4-speaker sound system.

FRIDAY 20TH JUNE 8pm – Welcome to Broad Town – have a drink on us!

Have you moved to Broad Town since June 2010? Yes? There’s a free pint with your name on it waiting for you at the bar.

Come and claim it, We’ve got real ales, traditional cider, draught Beck’s, wines, spirits and everything else you’d expect (You could always have a glass of wine, spirit & mixer, soft or hot drink instead if pints aren’t your thing). And we’re much cheaper than most pubs, so getting a round in won’t hurt your wallet!

So who can you expect to meet? All sorts, all ages, all walks of life. Our newest regular has only lived in the village a month, some others were born and raised in Broad Town; people’s backgrounds span students, current emergency services and ex-Forces, self-employed, IT workers, new mums and home-makers, public sector staff, engineers, craftsmen, professionals, tradesmen, pensioners – there’s bound to be folks with whom you have plenty in common. Chat with your neighbours, make new friends…

BINGO EVERY SUNDAY – open from 7.15pm; eyes down 8pm; last ball 9.45pm

Congratulations to May’s winner of our £60+ snowball prize! The bar is open till 8pm to non-players thirsting for a swift tincture! Never played Bingo before? Doesn't matter: come and have a try. Full bar plus tea, coffee, cappuccino and Aero hot chocolate always available. Players especially welcome from outside Broad Town: if you’ve got friends from other bingo nights itching to play – tell them where we are, or bring them along. We already have regulars from Purton, Bushton, Wroughton, RWB, Devizes… More players = bigger prizes! Supporting your local non-profit-making bingo venue helps us grow: unlike most commercial games, every pound you flutter is ALWAYS returned to our players in cash winnings!

GENTLEMEN’S BREAKFAST

The next Breakfast Club is on Saturday June 14th at 9.30am at The Mallard in Lyneham. Please let Dave May know if you would like to attend. The cost is £6.00 to include breakfast. davemay104@yahoo.co.uk

BROAD TOWN BIG GIG -SATURDAY 30TH AUGUST 2014

Firstly, we’ll start off with news of the Little Gig on Friday 13th June, 7pm onwards in the garden of The Crown, Broad Hinton (weather permitting, otherwise inside). This is a FREE event, headlined by the AK Poets and featuring Charlie-Anne, Full On and Nick Felix giving a great mix of live music, plus The Crown will lay on a BBQ. Transport is available BUT YOU MUST PRE-BOOK – a minibus will leave the village hall car park at 19:15 and return at 23:15 for a return fare of £3 per person. Please ring Andrew on 731472 or email andrewlaw456@gmail.com giving your name and no. of seats required. No booking, no seat on the bus! It will be a great night! Thanks to Alan Holmes, Epic Production Services and MotionDJ for supplying sound, lights and backline.

We’re still working on the Big Gig and have engaged the services of Talk In Code and The Sulks which pretty much completes our line-up – possibly the most diverse to date and probably the best of local talent – if Carlsberg did a mini festival it would be the Big Gig! The end of June will be the cut-off for discounted tickets, so if you haven’t bought already, do so now – this will be your last reminder! You can purchase tickets on our website via PayPal using either a PayPal account or a debit / credit card, or contact James on 731108. The regular prices are: £17.50 age 18 and over, £7.50 age 12 to 17 inclusive, under 12s free, however, remember: until 30th June you can buy at 2010 prices - £15 and £5 respectively! If you have any suggestions or comments, please get in touch! www.broadtownbiggig.co.uk / www.facebook.com/broadtownbiggig

WILTSHIRE MOVIOLA

BUMPS AND BEYOND

The friendly Broad Town baby and toddler group is looking for new people to come along on Tuesday mornings, 9.30 - 11.30 during term time and ideally to join the committee too. Many of the existing committee and members are leaving in July due to their children reaching school age so we are looking for new people to take over and carry on the tradition. It's a fun, relaxed group where children and adults can meet up for a coffee and play with some great toys. Please pop along on a Tuesday morning or call 731811 for more information

BROAD TOWN PRE-SCHOOL AND FOREST SCHOOL

Open day on Friday 6th June from 1pm. Please do come along to see what we do and take part in some fun-packed forest activities. If you have any friends with young children who may be interested in coming to the pre-school please do encourage them to come and meet the staff, other parents and some of the children. The pre-school has a fantastic reputation and is one of the few forest school in the area - great for children who love exploring nature, making dens and building campfires, all in an educational environment! Call 01793 731911 for more information or www.broadtownpreschool.co.uk.

BUSY BEES

We meet in Bushton Village Hall on second and fourth Wednesdays 1.45 to 2.45pm. We welcome all babies and toddlers and their parents or carers and any other family visitors who happen to be around at the time. Do come for a coffee, a chat, and a play. Plenty of parking and lots of room to play.

Please contact Kim Gough on kim.gough@rocketmail.com or on 07850933344. We look forward to meeting you.

Money in your Pocket - Over the next few months I plan to offer some ideas on how to make your money go further. The first article is on Pensions……

FIND OUT HOW TO CLAIM YOUR PENSION CREDITS!

It has been highlighted that about 4 million older people are entitled to Pension Credit, yet about a third of you do not claim money that is yours!

There are 2 parts of Pension Credit- you may be eligible to receive one or both of them.

Guarantee Pension Credit tops up your weekly income to a guaranteed minimum level set by the Government.

Savings Pension Credit is extra money for people who have a small amount of savings.

Pension Credit is a benefit designed to ensure that men and women over the qualifying age have a guaranteed level of income. So if your state pension is low and you have a small or no private pension, Guaranteed Pension Credits will top up the basic State Pension to what the Government feels is the amount required to maintain a basic standard of living.

People over the age of 65 may be awarded the Savings Pension Credit if they have basic pension and low savings. “Savings” are considered to be cash in savings accounts etc. If you own your own house, this is not considered to be “savings”. Pension Credit is not taxable.

Pension Credit can be paid to home owners, tenants and people in other circumstances such as those living with family or friends.

If you receive Pension Credits you may also be entitled to: Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, help with Health costs such as Dental charges and the cost of Spectacles, Cold Weather Payments and you may be entitled to Grants or loans from the social fund.

If you need further information on any of the above, or information on any other matter, give me a call on 07557 110414 or email rwbcrickladegnc@communityfirst.org.uk

Calling All White Horse Cleaners, Cleaning Event 14 & 15 June (10-12 o’clock both days)We think it is now safe enough to visit and clean the White Horse. Whether it is members of your own family, members of the community or just all those who did not come back is up to you. There will be candles available if you wish to light one. There will be no formal service, just quiet for you to think. The files about the people from Broad Town will be available to look at, articles about the War Graves Commission and other items. The length of time you stay is entirely up to you. All the churches in the benefice will be open during that day.

Evening Vigil will start at 8.pm that evening at Hilmarton. There will be a short service; and for the rest of the evening people are welcome to come and pray. The vigil will finish with the last candle being extinguished at 11.pm. That does not mean that people have to stay the whole 3hours. We expect people to drift in and out quietly all evening.
