ON RESULTS

August is the month when the results of public exams come out – A levels on 15^th, BTECs on 21^st and GCSEs on 22^nd.

Sometimes it feels as if large parts of our lives, even if we are no longer worried about exams is measured by outcomes.  This might be as a student, or as a friend or a relative, in our workplaces, or by our cholesterol level or our waistlines.

Sometimes people still cherish an experience of success (I’m very proud of a certificate for chutney making from a Bushton Produce Show, although based on this year’s attempts that may have been luck rather than skill)

Sometimes people still harbour a sense of disappointment remembering a long distant 11 plus, or failed driving test.

The danger is that it can seem as if our worth as human depends on these assessments.  Of course, it’s nice for hard work to get results, to do well, to be praised, and to achieve.

Yet the real challenges of success and failure might be very different.  How do you measure happy? How can you assess the value of kindness?  How do you measure the achievement of learning to live again after loss of a loved one or serious illness?  How can anyone assess progress on their spiritual journey through life?

It hurts when I fail and yet failure liberates me to learn to fail better the next time; success sometimes does nothing more than pile on the pressure to keep succeeding or opens a gap between an inner sense of value and the outer assessment by the world.

Most wonderful is friendship and love that don’t change whether I’m failing or succeeding.

A small kindness can be enough to completely lift a mood and most of us will know how precious are the gifts nurtured by those who seem to have set aside success in order to care for others – in fostering children, caring for the elderly, being friendly to a lonely neighbour, in cherishing a pet or a plant and in helping a community to flourish.

Whatever results you wait for, may you discover rewards in any failures and know your true worth is in the uniqueness of the human being that you are.

BROAD TOWN FOOTPATH WORKING GROUP

The Broad Town Footpath Working Group has been set up as an official working group of the Parish Council, working with support from Wiltshire Council Rights of Way team.  The aim of the group over the coming months and years is to repair, improve and maintain as much of the parish’s network of footpaths and bridleways as is possible.  As the project gets up and running, volunteers will be invited to assist with tasks around the parish.  As an official working group we benefit from being covered by the PC’s insurance while out working.

We are now preparing tasks to be tackled during autumn/winter 2019 and we have set aside the following days to work on some of them.  No skills are required, training and tools can be provided where necessary.

We have been working over the last couple of weeks on clearing undergrowth on footpath BTOW28, from behind Brewery Cottage alongside the Manor Farm field.  It would be good if it could start to be walked more, to keep the undergrowth down; there is nothing better than using the paths to keep them passable!

 

COMMUNITY COFFEE MORNING

RIDE AND STRIDE COFFEE MORNING

The Church Coffee Shop will be open for business on Sat Sept 14^th for the usual delectable tea, coffee, cake and conversation.

The doors will be open from 10am till noon. There will be the usual sales table and activities for the children.

RIDE AND STRIDE 2019

SUPPORTING THE WORK OF THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

A group of villagers including Rosemary & Andrew Law, Annette Moore, Lesley Blackburn and Paul & Anne Granger are aiming to raise over £1,000 to support the fantastic work of the Alzheimer’s Society by taking on their Trek26Stonehenge challenge.  We will be walking 13 miles in tough terrain (i.e. scrambling up and down steep hills!) around Salisbury and Warminster on Saturday 31^st August 2019.  Google Trek26Stonehenge if you want to see what it’s all about.

THE GODDARD ARMS, CLYFFE PYPARD

As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, a group of people are trying to raise support to buy The Goddard Arms in Clyffe Pypard.  The group has until November to raise the funds and negotiate to buy it.

The Plunkett Foundation is a charity that specialises in supporting community lead projects and they have started to provide some useful advice.  We need to understand what sort of pub the community wants and how much support it has.  It would be helpful if anyone who is interested could complete a short online questionnaire:  www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/DJPBHGM

COMMUNITY HEARTBEAT TRUST DEFIBRILLATOR

This is a reminder that we have a defibrillator in the Village.  It is sited outside the Village Hall and is available for anyone to use in the unfortunate situation of someone they are with having heart failure.  It is simple to use and talks you through what you must do.  It is a requirement though, that you RING 999 FIRST to get help on the way as soon as possible.  The ambulance service will also tell you what to do and support you while you wait for the ambulance.  If you are within 200m of the Hall they will automatically tell you about the defibrillator and tell you the access code.  If you are further away but have someone who could fetch it for you quickly, you will need to ask them for the access code.

 

THE GUILD OF WILTSHIRE ARTISTS

Run workshops at the Village Hall on every first Friday and third Saturday of the month from 10am to 3pm.  All are welcome including painters who are beginners. The cost is still £5 per person per session which includes tea/coffee and biscuits but do bring a packed lunch.  Help will be given to those who request it.
