ARE WE LAMP-LIGHTERS?

When Robert Louis Stevenson was a small boy in Edinburgh he was often unwell and had to stay in his room. One winter evening as night fell, his nurse found him with his nose pressed to the window pane. “Come away Master Robert,” she said. “You’ll catch your death of cold.” “But nurse” replied Robert, “Come and Look! There is something wonderful happening out there. There is a man going down the street making holes in the dark!”

I imagine some of us have never seen an old-fashioned lamp-lighter with his long pole. But what a lovely way of putting it – making holes in the dark!

And we can still do it of course, for other people in the darkness of sorrow or need. A smile, the grip of the hand, a word of sympathy or encouragement – there are plenty of ways of being a lamp-lighter!

THANK YOU

A big thank you to the School and parish as approx. 100Kg of food was taken to the Food Bank. They have expressed their great thanks to everybody who donated.

FINANCIAL UPDATE FROM BROAD TOWN CHURCH

During September, 250 leaflets were delivered to all households in Broad Town, Thornhill and Cotmarsh highlighting the Church’s need for financial support. We would like to thank all those who have replied with offers of support both financially and in other ways.

The response has been encouraging - although we have received only 7 new replies & a number of reviewed existing commitments - but we are hopeful that we will continue to receive further promises to help us meet our financial commitments.

If you have not replied, or are unable to assist at present, you can reply at any time in the future and if you would like any further information please contact either of the following:-

CHRIST CHURCH, BROAD TOWN CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES

On December 6th we will again be opening the café from 10.00am to 12noon for our Christmas Coffee Morning. We will be having various stalls including cakes, Christmas goodies, tombola and refreshments. Tickets for the Christmas raffle will be on sale. The first prize this year is a short break at a sea-side cottage at Strumble Head, Pembrokeshire courtesy of Mr and Mrs Rendell. A brilliant prize you must agree!! Tickets are available from many members of the Church or phone Margaret and Clive on 01793 854200

The Christmas Carol Service will be on Thursday evening, December 18th at 6.00pm. There is no school for the children the day after so come as a family and let us fill the Church with singing. The service will be followed with refreshments.

SCHOOL

On Friday 14th November the School will be raising money for Children in Need.

Don’t forget the children break up on Thursday 18th December after their carol service at 2.00pm. But the teachers still have a TT Day on the Friday!

PARISH CLERKS CLIPPINGS

1 No request has been made to hold an election for the vacancy on the Parish Council. The Council will now co-op a member. Watch this space.

2. The hedges on the playing field have been trimmed, making the area much tidier. The Parish Council is still looking for someone who is willing to keep an eye on the playing field, or, more importantly, who is willing to lead a team to improve the facilities. Some funding is available.

3. A plan to improve road safety through the Village has now been agreed and will be implemented sometime in the New Year.

4. More information from Wilts Council is being put on their website, and far less by post. The website, wiltshire.gov.uk. It is well worth looking at occasionally - even I find it useful.

BROAD TOWN WI

At our October meeting, our members, friends and even some husbands attempted a little ‘Line Dancing’. We were suitably dressed in checked shirts, jeans, cowboy boots and even a few Stetsons. With the help of our caller we attempted chasses, triple steps and right and left grapevines to name just a few. It was great fun and I think we did better than any of us expected. We finished the evening with a hotdog and some cider.

There is a change to the programme for November, due to our speaker being unavailable, so we will ‘Share and Tell’ with members recommending books they have enjoyed, interesting places they have visited, recommended films, theatre trips, restaurants etc.

New members are always welcome so if you are interested phone Jane on 731105 for more information.

BROAD TOWN COMMUNITY LED PLANNING (CLP) GROUP

Although it may seem that work on the Neighbourhood Plan has slowed down it has been continuing behind the scenes and the Joint Working Group (with representatives from the Parish Council and CLPG) is about to prepare the next consultation stage. As this is an inclusive plan for seven villages, progress must go in tandem with them, co-ordinated by the Area Steering Group. The next stages agreed by the Area Steering Group are:

Consultation in each village on the draft plan together with the draft strategic plans for the whole area;

Comments on the draft plan to be noted (and potentially amendments made as a result);

A local poll (yes or no) on the draft plan

All these stages must be organised and paid for with village resources.

The resulting document will go forward to Wiltshire Council for the formal stages which will be organised and paid for by Wiltshire Council.

The JWG met with Mat Pearson, Senior Spatial Planning Officer with Wiltshire Council. Mat explained that Wiltshire Council policy (Core Strategy) is very strong for Broad Town and that Broad Town doesn’t need to deliver housing due to its status as a small village. The Core Strategy is restrictive & protective of small villages and provides for infill only. Wiltshire Council would only allow a higher level of housing if it was the outcome of consultation and included in the Neighbourhood Plan. Mat also explained that housing development brings levies upon developers for Wiltshire Council to spend on infrastructure in the area where the development takes place, although this does not apply to social or sub-market housing.

BUSY BEES

We meet in Bushton Village Hall on second and fourth Wednesdays 1.45 to 2.45pm. We welcome all babies and toddlers and their parents or carers and any other family visitors who happen to be around at the time. Do come for a coffee, a chat, and a play. Plenty of parking and lots of room to play.

Please contact Kim Gough on kim.gough@rocketmail.com or on 07850933344. We look forward to meeting you.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP?????????

Our retired horse and pony need a new home. We are looking for grazing and shelter of some sort with a small amount of storage for hay, shavings and rugs as close to Clyffe Pypard as possible. We prefer a quiet location possibly on a farm rather than a large livery yard. We are also interested in a rural house (not near a busy road) with a minimum of 4 bedrooms to rent. If this could be combined with a home for the horses, any local rural area would be of interest.

If you can help or know someone who can please contact us. Email:- findusahome2014@outlook.com or Tel- 07879911230

In exchange you will be able to ride my horse and have full access to our facilities: arena 40x20; all necessary jumps & poles; field with cross country jumps. I am also open to the possibility of him being competed with under the right circumstances.

Location: Broad Town. Contact Peggy 07766734400 Must be under 70kgs & have a rider insurance*
